Photo-a-Day (Thursday, 23rd October, 2014)
Wigan Eye
Very nice Ernest....Now, who's going to post a view taken from the top of the "Eye"??
Where is the policeman on point duty ? Last time I was there he was waving the traffic around.
I can see one person ;risking it'or is it too early morning''
Yesterday's Wigan Observer's front page had a pic of what the area will look like after yet another expensive revamp. A water feature is included - when the stated idea is to create a better open space for events.

Well done Pyke, I like the way you have caught the road repair barriers in your snap.
Ellen there was a photo taken from the top of the big wheel on Photo a Day on Sunday, 19th October, 2014 by Dave Oy
Nice shot Ernest . The Betfred shop was the Meadow Dairy grocers when I worked around the corner at Lowes 1960.
Is this permanent feature now?doesn`t look right.
When I first saw it...I too thought where is the policeman?
I remember the meadow dairies well and that was in the 50`s.Did it really survive into the 6o`s? it was a great food store ...none of this ready packed stuff.all was cut and sliced as you wanted it.Lowes was a grand store too has that been "taken over" also? just remembered super "ccol" coffe shop above meadow dairies Just around the start of the Coffee bar craze.Oh happy memories !!
Jean,Tom,both right about Meadows shop.My Mam (Elsie Edwards) worked there in 50's&60's.
Why take the photo from that angle?
Thanks for the comments.
An uncle of mine was the manager of the Meadow Dairy before the 1939-1945 war.
Ellen; How`s the weather where you are? Obviously you didn`t see Dave Oy`s P-a-D on 19th Oct. 2014.
A Parr Aussie; Photo was taken last Sat.18th Oct. 2014 at approx.3pm. It was windy and blowing up Wallgate towards this wheel.
Jean; This wheel was only temporary and isn`t there now.
Ernest-We're having some beautiful fall days at present; having had most of our summer weather in the last few weeks of September! The rest of the summer was quite grey and gloomy.
...however,the trees are really beautiful this year.
....Sorry I'd overlooked the picture on October 19.--I plead fuzzy mindedness due to a painful attack of Shingles, -anyone out there who's had it will know what I mean!?
Mick, that comment sounds sarcastic to me, let's hope you're still taking pics when you are Ernests age, Garry get your a..e into gear and take some pics yourself so we can rip them apart. Good pic Ernest, come on all you ex Wiganers get yourselves back here and take a look.
Thanks Ellen; I had shingles in both groins with the most excruciating pain. Fortunately, you only have shingles once.
Jonno; We know Mick! Well said about Garry.
Ernest Pyke--don't you believe that ask about the jab for shingles at the doctors, nice photo thanks they was putting the same fiar up in St-Helens yesterday ready for the school holidays
Dougie; Extract from Shevington Surgery letter rec`d 29 Aug. 2014:-
"SHINGLES VACCINATION. The following age groups will be offered vaccination this year:-
Born between 2.9.1934 and 1.9.1936 (but you must have the vaccination before your 80th birthday as it is not licensed for use in the over 80`s)
Born between 2.9.1943 and 1.9.1944."
I`ve been drawing the extra 25p/week pension for 6 years and 9 months now!
Ernest...nice to have you back on board !
Jonno very well said. We need more like you!! Come back soon! Great picture Ernest, thank you .
Yes Ernest you are correct Mick is known and a real genuine person ,unlike plenty who come on here.
Brenda who ever you are, its not Great picture its just a snap of Wigan.
Jonno who ever you are yes my comment might sounds a bit sarcastic to you
Mick, it is not a great picture according to you but to me it is. When I saw this I thought my god how different from my early days and when the fair was in market square. I found it interesting Mick how Wigan has changed.
