Ferris Wheel
Good photo. Lots of changes apparent since I left Wigan in 1972.
dizzy heights eh?
Not a patch on the old "Wigan Fair".
What has Wigan fair come to. You can't replicate the old market square location. And where are the black peas
Wonder what the object on the centre right of the horizon is, could it by chance be the flying man that was recently seen swirling around at 300 feet by the crew of an airbus when coming in to land at Manchester airport.
Or is it angel Gabriel come to give Mick's ass a reet good kicking for the audacity of suggesting that he was named after archangel Michael.
The shot would have been better if the two seats on the wheel was out of sight. Just two seconds later, a perfect shot.
Haigh Hall in the back ground.
If advertising isn't allowed how come PONTS FERRIS WHEEL is allowed?
Nice to see a different angle of this popular scene
I can count about 20 people on that photo so it looks like the fair is not bringing people into the town centre.
I suppose having a traffic free area means things like this little fairground draw people to the town centre. God Forbid that those with the power don't decide to revamp the black & white buildings...that would signal the end of Wigan. Nice clear photo, must have been early morning.
A nice photo Dave, but the Ferris wheel does look out of place in the town centre. I presume the 2 flying birds are pigeons.
Great pic of Market Place. I take back my earlier comments. The Council have made it pedestrian friendly and modern. When did the traffic cop go who stood where Wallgate ended?
Lovely! I'm coming up on WEdnesday and can't wait! What's happening to WH Smiths?
Giovanni,
Wigan Police amalgamated with Lancashire Constabulary in 1969. Replacing the police officer on 'point duty' ,by traffic lights, was one of the first changes made soon after that amalgamation.
Thank goodness it was decided to revamp the monstrosity that was the central arcade. Although the frontage is modern I always think it a great improvement on the previous eyesore.
As usual good piccy.
Thanks Aubrey.
Another question. When did the subterranean toilets disappear? Always handy when coming out of the Crofters! I remember the toilet attendant who kindly found my watch one Xmas when I was eager to meet a date outside Lowes!
You're right Ken R, Wigan Fair was the best, a real fair. Here in Norfolk we have a big fair called Kings Lynn Mart & even that can't match my memories of the one at Wigan on the Market Square.
Alan (on Vancouver Island) Can't believe that you haven't been back to your home town in over 40 years, shame on you. Lovely photo Dave.
Thanks for your comment HENRY7. 1972 was when I first emigrated. I come back occasionally on vacation, but frequently get lost as things have changed a lot, or is it that my memory is failing me ?
Best regards
Alan
Great shot again Dave. Disagree with Garry think you got this just right in my eyes. Amazing colours combined.
Like this one Dave. Get,s better the more you blow it up and look at it again.
He's a right fool.
Still 'dead' quiet in the town centre - even with 'Wigan Fair'...
