The Sanctuary of St Wilfrid's, Standish.
Photo: Rev David Long (Sony SLT-A65V)
I was named after St Michael the Archangel.
I remember once asking my mother why there was only me out of five of us in our family who only had one christian name.
She said because I was named after the head angel Michael and one was good enough.
I love the colours of the flowers arrangements, skilfully done. Also the two small sheaves of corn by the altar, below that wonderful window. As a child in Holland Moor, many of us kids at the time of the corn harvest, would be in the fields behind the houses, running behind the machine that chucked out the sheaves, we would stand them up in stooks and in case you are wondering if that all took place in the year crumb, it was about 1950 actually.
Very pleasing picture, Rev.
Great lighting and well balanced.
What a beautiful church and well done to whoever arranged the flowers!
Thanks for another great pic Rev.
I have just bought a book "LANCASHIRE WHO LIES BENEATH?" In St Wilfrid's churchyard is a grave containing the ashes of a world famous opera singer Eva Turner. Never heard of her until I read this book.
Hello Bradshaws Girl how ya doing?.Eva Turner wa born in Werneth in Oldham in 1892 she died on the 16th June1990 aged 98.Was there any significance that she was buried in Standish. She was trained in London and Milan and was once engaged to an Italian musical director. At the age of 91 she was surpiised by Eamomn Andrews and appeared on This Is Your Life. She had a very accomplished career and was well respected in her field. Why Standish ?.
I think she lived in Standish at one point with her parents.
Margery Booth the Opera Singer was born in Wigan
And Kathleen Ferrier the Opera Singer was from Walton Le Dale Preston.
Ive never heard of Eva Turner Standish connection.
This picture has everything.
Hi Colin, Eva Turner's ashes are in her parents grave. Her father was from Wigan but I don't think she ever lived here.
Never been inside St Wilfs....beautiful photo Rev David....hope you are keeping well...cheers!!
