The Sanctuary of St Wilfrid's, Standish.

The Sanctuary of St Wilfrid's, Standish.
The church was decorated for the Harvest Festival celebrated the day before the picture was taken. The picture was taken on Michaelmas Day, September 29th, when St Michael the Archangel is celebrated. The four figures flanking the centre of the reredos (that's the panel behind the High Altar) represent the four Archangels - Uriel, Gabriel, Michael and Raphael.

I was named after St Michael the Archangel.
I remember once asking my mother why there was only me out of five of us in our family who only had one christian name.
She said because I was named after the head angel Michael and one was good enough.

I love the colours of the flowers arrangements, skilfully done. Also the two small sheaves of corn by the altar, below that wonderful window. As a child in Holland Moor, many of us kids at the time of the corn harvest, would be in the fields behind the houses, running behind the machine that chucked out the sheaves, we would stand them up in stooks and in case you are wondering if that all took place in the year crumb, it was about 1950 actually.

Thanks for another great pic Rev.
I have just bought a book "LANCASHIRE WHO LIES BENEATH?" In St Wilfrid's churchyard is a grave containing the ashes of a world famous opera singer Eva Turner. Never heard of her until I read this book.

Hi Colin, Eva Turner's ashes are in her parents grave. Her father was from Wigan but I don't think she ever lived here.
