I don't know if this is a good picture or not. I know where it is, but what is it?. It looks alien, garish, out of this worldish. I know it is the centre of Wigan but not MY Wigan.

Comment by: David Fairclough on 26th May 2014 at 00:52

Looks like it was taken just after the last shot, early morning in Wigan

Comment by: Janet(FL) on 26th May 2014 at 02:20

Nothing against Andrews picture taking, it's a good picture, but, I agree with Ken R, it isn't the Wigan town Centre of my younger days, the town I loved... that town has gone...

Looks artificial.

Looks like a model village in away

How come a choir boy as the keys to the tower

Comment by: joe graney on 26th May 2014 at 07:04

Comment by: Walter Southern on 26th May 2014 at 07:55

You are right Ken, it's not the Wigan we remember but we have to move on tha'nos, one area of this " Lovely picture" we do remember is the small hill to the rear - centre left of the photo, Aspull's woodchy rook, ah yes ! I remember it well.

I like this one too. Nice to see it from a different angle.

Comment by: maggie. on 26th May 2014 at 09:43

Actually, I recognise it, unlike the previous one. It made me feel homesick for Wigan.

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 26th May 2014 at 11:57

Entrance to the Wiend (Weind?Weint?) is lit up!

Comment by: kath on 26th May 2014 at 12:45

Great picture. How do you get to go up the tower? Wigan has changed but every town changes and evolves.Anyway at least the underground toilets have gone!

Comment by: Andrew on 26th May 2014 at 17:02

Kath, I'm a very active member of WPC and have a key for some of the bits and pieces I need to do.

Comment by: Jack on 26th May 2014 at 18:08

Agree with Ken and Janet. Not the Wigan I remember. Especially the large greenhouse next to where Woolworths used to be...

Comment by: Jemmy on 26th May 2014 at 18:45

Town of younger days has gone? Thank god for that! Wigan has NEVER looked better or been a better place to live.

Comment by: David on 26th May 2014 at 21:07

It's different view from the last time I was up the tower when my dad looked after the clock in the late fifties

Comment by: Jack on 26th May 2014 at 21:28

Jemmy. Too right it's gone!!!

Comment by: Red Stripe on 26th May 2014 at 23:58

Why is everyone obsessed whether he has permission or not? He is not likely to have broken into Parish Church Tower then advertised it on here. That is a true picture of Market Place/Market Street in Wigan Town Centre as it is today. Scholes Flats in the background.

Give me Wigan back from the 1950s-60s, a much nicer and better place.

Comment by: Jack on 27th May 2014 at 14:13

I'm with you Garry.

Comment by: Ken R on 28th May 2014 at 00:40

Walter Southern, would you give me a call kenroo@bell.net Thanks, Ken.

Comment by: Patrick on 28th May 2014 at 12:35

Fantastic shot of Wigan as it is today, Andrew. Well done! I love these types of images.

Comment by: Jemmy on 29th May 2014 at 10:16

1950s - 60s Wigan a better place? Only in imagination, Garry and Jack.

Comment by: Garry on 29th May 2014 at 12:18

No, in REALITY!

Wigan of old has gone! Ask the children of Wigan, do you care less about the old Wigan, the buildings, the times the era? Don,t be daft, they are now on mobiles and computers.
