Photo-a-Day (Sunday, 12th January, 2014)
Gathurst Motorway Bridge
Nice photo. The old and the new, totally different means of transportation, but each one quite necessary both now and then.
Dean Locks where the navigable River Douglas used to be joined onto the Leeds Liverpool canal by a set of locks.
Happy days! it was really great sailing along this canal, especially when we went past where I used to play.
Maggie, i asked you a question on Friday's P a D. There is also the Southport/Manchester railway line at the top of the banking on the left and the river Douglas also unseen, to the right of the photo. I have seen 'trains and boats and planes'(as the song goes) at the same time there on more than one occasion.
You can see Dean Lock in the Album under Gathurst. The large stones around the old lock are still in position and can can be seen today. It was one of the brainwaves of Prince Albert.
