The last time I saw Scholes it was all grey stone row houses. What a change !

Aha....the way to Haigh Hall....thank you Thomas.....these are important pictures as I need to see areas I have never been to...cheers!!!

Uninspiring shot!

Sorry Thomas, i'm in total agreement with Malc.

He's brave "window down in scowls"

I think you have missed the humour of the photo - 'Haigh Hall' pointing at the flats - rather than a road sign to follow. Well spotted.

I think it's a good photo in the sense that people who left Wigan when Scholes was just terraced rows, Back-yards, corner shops, pubs and The Royal George Lodging-House can see how it looks now.

Surely the Royal George was on the corner of Hardybutts.

I'm not sure just where the Royal George was, Anne; I just meant it would show people who lived in Wigan how different the Scholes area looks now.

can we have a photo of scholes-enge please

Comment by: Ken R on 31st October 2013 at 16:23

I think the shot of Scholes has made Irene stutter.

Comment by: peter on 31st October 2013 at 16:42

The royal George was indeed on the corner of Harrogate street
I used to walk past on my way to the baths
Happy days

Comment by: Anne on 31st October 2013 at 18:26

Peter NOT Harrogate street, HARDYBUTTS

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 31st October 2013 at 19:09

I think we all knew what Irene meant...Scholes has been completely transformed since the 1960, I'm not too sure if people would recognise the place if they haven't seen it/or have lived abroad for the passed 50 years. (if you know what I mean)

Comment by: Ellen on 1st November 2013 at 01:16

How right you are, Colin (and Janice too)

Comment by: Ellen on 1st November 2013 at 01:20

My apologies; I meant to say Irene, not Janice. I plead advancing (rapidly!) age!
