Well below there is lots of water waiting to be used, but I for one wouldn't want to be showered by it knowing where it came from

I'll look forward to progress reports!

Is this the council's doing ? What are they doing now, vandalising their own vandalisation ... That's a laugh, pity it's not their own money they're wasting ?

Comment by: Roy on 18th October 2013 at 10:29

A complete waste of time, money and effort, especially the money. What's wrong with it as it is?

Comment by: maggie on 18th October 2013 at 11:36

I have a lovely memory from way back - when I was a schoolgirl. I was standing opposite the toilets waiting for a friend. There was a beggar just opposite, but the loos. He was waving a packet & calling "Elastic, elas-bloody -tic." I thought it was so funny. I didn't buy any.

Yet another act of wanton demolition and unnecessary expense, it isn't all that long ago when those expensive granite slabs were laid there.

The fountain will courtesy of the pub and club goers, soon be full of urine. vomit and half eaten rubbish that is passed off as food, still All Saint's gardens will be a lot cleaner.

Comment by: Mick on 18th October 2013 at 11:46

Thanks for the info Ernest, it looks like it going to be lovely and modern when its finished just like the fountains in centre of modern Manchester.

Comment by: Garry on 18th October 2013 at 12:25

I cant figer out where this is?

Comment by: Dave Marsh on 18th October 2013 at 12:32

Maybe Barclays could chip in on the cost.

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 18th October 2013 at 12:48

Mick; The centre of Manchester, in my opinion, is the ugliest in England. The sunken gardens should never have been demolished.

Comment by: Anne on 18th October 2013 at 12:49

If it's going to be as shown on 3rd Oct. post it will need a close mesh cage surround, top as well.

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 18th October 2013 at 13:35

Garry; Where do you live? Ever heard of Google?

Comment by: Roy on 18th October 2013 at 13:59

Where the underground toilets used to be Garry, Standish bus stop and transport offices.Parish Church behind Barclay's unfortunately.

Comment by: Roy on 18th October 2013 at 14:03

Comment by: Garry on 18th October 2013 at 15:46

Comment by: peter on 18th October 2013 at 16:21

Never mind that Roy
Lizzie, are you meeting me at adelaide airport? :))

Comment by: Mick on 18th October 2013 at 17:06

Ernest I was told that Manchester sunken gardens were just a hang out for drug addicts, winos and prostitutes.

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 18th October 2013 at 18:38

Roy; Photo #4817, 1st on 4th row on page 3 in Album, Places, Market Place shows Wigan Parish Church when Lowe`s had been demolished. Can`t remember how long before it was `part hidden` again.

Comment by: Neil Rigby on 18th October 2013 at 19:04

I have see this kind of development before; where benches, walkways, walls, sunken gardens etc. in the centre of a town have been replaced by open spaces (see Ernest's comment 08:25). In doing this, the foundations of the open space are greatly strengthened - so that heavy "things" can be brought in, such as Performance Stages and other big machines for various events. See a (temporary event) big wheel here:-

This was not possible in the Square in the photo before and extensive redevelopment.

Comment by: Fred Mason on 18th October 2013 at 19:05

I believe that Wigan Council is struggling to make the town attractive. They should just have left the town alone and maintained it in good health. It was great in the fifties and sixties, full of character and now...????

Comment by: Jean F (Wales) on 18th October 2013 at 21:12

Hope they are going to do some improvement on the buildings behind the "new" fountain....what an eyesore.
