being turned into a couple of houses. Went past the other week and saw a gang of Indian labourers moving by hand a massive steel RSJ - not a crane or hoist in sight
anothert pub gone - Do you remember when Ossie Butler was landlord there?
The Commercial Inn was run for decades by Nelly Lythgoe ,one of the first women to be granted a licence . A formidable woman who would bar anyone heard to swear . She was respected as a person, firm but fair ,kind to people who fell on hard times .R.I.P.
Ossie Butler that's a name from the past,I knew Ossie when were kids last time i saw him he was driving a concrete wagon thats probably twenty years ago
My money is this pub will be turned into more flats [some will call them apartments] Its such a shame its not so much the pub but the industry that's gone to. A lot of people say its only a pub with no thought to the breweries the glass makers the bar staff the cleaners the list goes on & on, not to mention our heritage. Good shot Harry
John I was told by one of the builders that it is going to be two houses, I'll get a pic of the front when it's done. The Hare and Hounds down Bolton Road is going to be flats (apartments) Cheers. H.
