I ride past this place a few times a week and there usually lots of rubbish on the canal bank that been pulled out of the canal.

Glad you didnt point you camera the other way Roger and take a photo of Bithells stinking rubbish dump

sometimes I think these cottages must be a lovely place to live and then I wonder if they get plagued by rats?

Lizzie, the bay window was just for that, to give the lock keeper a clear view both ways up and down the canal. Just as toll keeper houses were on ancient roads.

I don't know about nowadays Kath, but at one time the cottages at Wigan Pier this cottage, and the cottage at Rose Bridge and also the cottage at Top Lock all had problems with rats, more so in winter.

This pic took me back 42 yrs when I was an apprentice at Wigan Printing Company which must have been right close to where Mr. Whistlecroft took this photo. Started at the old factory in Chapel Lane opposite Douglas House flats. Anyone remember me apart from Geoff Charnock and Harry Cunliffe?
