Nice picture, but I don't remember ever seeing it. Where is it ?
Nice one Oy.....like you say very clean looking white paint.....good one....cheers!!!!
Only been in there once in 2002 on a visit, pint cost me an arm and a leg. Would this be the oldest pub in Wigan?
I think it was only converted to a pub a few years ago probably 1970's? Can't remember ever hearing about it. or going in it in the 1960's
I remember going in there in around March 1977, it was fairly new then. Before that it had been a cobbler's/leatherworkers shop. Weeks before John bull opened there was a little advert in the Wigan Observer "John Bull Is Coming" nobody had a clue what it was all about.
It's in Cooper's Row which is off Market Place which you can see in the background. Perhaps a more famous establishment previously situated nearby was the Empire cinema.
Nice photo.I used to work there when Harold was the Landlord, lovely man R.I.P.
It won't be the oldest pub in town because it's only been a pub since the 70s, but the building is quite old, there's a sectionn of exposed brickwork inside which is claimed to be about 500 years old.
Dave, I put `coopers row wigan uk` on Google Earth and there`s a photo:-`The John Bull Chophouse - lightning 1975.` See:-

Looked at it in Windows Photo Gallery, then could see that sign on left is `Thwaites`.
I sometimes go thro`Cooper`s Row on way to the library, the other day in fact, but didn`t notice this lick o`paint.
Yours is an excellent photo, as per usual; any tripod?
Ian Glover took a photo in October 2003 and it`s in Wigan Streets, Cooper`s Row.

Wasn't ip opened by two local architects in the 70s?
There's a lot of history under those cobbles.
