Photo-a-Day (Tuesday, 22nd January, 2013)
Welcome to Wigan
Thankyou Andrew......this is lovely when I am so far away from you all....bless you...cheers!!!!
Not to take anything away from your photo Andrew, but this is nothing like the Wigan I grew up with... I'm guessing they are the Scholes flats at the back, but I have no idea of where you are stood Andrew, to take this photo... I would be totally lost trying to get in and out of Wigan...
Are we expected to guess where this picture was taken?
Nice bright photo, is the blue sky photoshopped. My brother who lives in Wigan talks as though its been raining for 12 months. By the way is this location looking down from Scholes.
What a peculiar sky; it's so uniformly grey! However I can clearly see shadow, so the sun is behind the camera.
...I really like the welcome to Wigan sign.
I can't make out where this is Andrew
Good picture, is it somewhere near Scholefield Lane?
The Lidl on Warrington Rd
Interesting shot!
Lots of zoom compression so I reckon it's taken with a zoom lens off the ramp up from the canal onto Warrington Road.
What a welcome.....
Morning folks
No photoshoppery - a break in the clouds provided the light on the flats with dark clouds behind.
All you Wiganers and you don't know where it is taken from!
It's taken from Britannia Bridge, Lower Ince, from the canal at Warrington Road, looking towards Darlington Street.
When did they put the 'Welcome to Wigan' sign up? And why was the 'Ince' sign on the other side of Boundary Street not replaced after it went missing with one of the new signs they put up on the Higher Ince boundaries of Ince?
If the penny hasn't dropped... the shot was taken from the canal bank at Britannia Bridge. The fence is on the corner of Orrell Street and Warrington Lane, around the Sovereign Street Council Depot. The row of houses are on Hall Street, to the rear of the Lidl store - at the junction of Darlington Street East and Warrington Lane. A motor bike is stood at the junction lights - and the cars in the foreground are passing the largely empty office blocks on the site of Lymm Street, etc. on their way into Lower Ince.
this piccy is taken across the rd from wigan metro depot on sovereign rd.
Andrew - not all Wiganers don't know where it was taken I knew where it was and I live in Shevington. But is the sign not on the wrong side of the road, should it not be on the left for the traffic entering Wigan. Every sign of this nature I have seen are all on the right as you enter the area.
Yes it sounds like you really know where it is Maggie when your questioning the signs location.
Andrew, I have lived in the States for over 30 years and Wigan has changed more in the last 30 years than it did in the previous 100, with nice buildings torn down and ugly buildings replacing them, roads closed and others rerouted, NO I don't know Wigan any more...Still, I like your pic even though I don't know where you were stood...
I think Andrew is stood on the small car park that used to be where we lived until they demolished the houses..it's on the corner of Warrington Lane.
Mick - I don't understand your remark - if you read my comment, it is obvious that I am asking about the location of the sign from the photograph, it looks as though they have put it on the wrong side of the road. I say I know where the photograph was taken so I don't know why you question it. Many times as a girl I sat outside the Pepper Mill where Lidl now stands to watch the Whit Walks. I also have paid many visits to the sign shop nearby and have made many more vists to my aunty who lived in Hall Street and my brother went to Jerusalem school, I cross the road there many times at the zebra crossing when using the canal - now do you believe me I know where the sign is.
I also live in Shevy Maggie and I know that this road sign and all other road signs are put on the left of the road.
I agree with Janet, I've been away from Wigan for more than 40 years, at a quick glance, apart from the Welcome sign, this could easily be a picture of suburban Toronto, Ontario. (This being the city I have been most familiar with.)There does not appear to be any of the individuality I best remember about Wigan.
It is obvious its on the left hand side of the road. The photo was taken from the small car park opposite a small row of terraced house just under the railway bridge and prior to the Sovereign Road works department. Easy peasy!
Can't agree with Janet regarding ugly buildings replacing the old. Wigan has NEVER looked better.
The sign is on the left, the road passes between the bump of earth and the old Virgin Media building
Rev David, OK re viewpoint but where exactly is this sign?
Very clear and detailed photo Andrew,Maggie its just the angle the photos taken from look here.
http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz253/shadesofpail/Wigan/PICT0092_zpsdfcbe3e4.jpg its on the left as you enter wigan on sovereign road.
Think the sky looks full of snow> Good picture.
As I wrote above, I've not seen the sign before - but then I'm not passing this spot numerous times a week as I was until April.
It looks as if it's on the wide pavement outside the site of Twiss' bakery, which stood behind the grassy mound in front of the railings. The Wigan/ Ince boundary passes through the site, following the original line of the Clarington Brook.
I may be going that way tomorrow, so I'll be able to check.
THANKS to Rev David and my WIGAN ATO Z ,I figured it out ,my Auntie lived round the corner in Spring view.Uto play in the Air shelters with May and her friends in the 40s.
Andrew, you`ve confused a lot of us with using a zoom lens! Should have taken notice of Dave (Oy) comment. What`s compressed zoom Dave?
Thanks David Barker, if you`d commented earlier, there would have been less comments! Rev David, all is now clear - have you settled in at Standish?
There's nothing confusing about it, Ernest! Anyone who knows Ince and Wigan could work it out in seconds.
I can confirm that the new Welcome to Wigan sign is indeed on the wide pavement outside the former Twiss' bakery on the descent from the canal bridge at Britannia Bridge.
Gary, naturally it`s not confusing to those familiar with Ince!
I`m familiar with Wigan but not so with Ince.
I don't think there's one part of Ince/Wigan I couldn't recognise from a photo, Ernest. There's an idea, 'mystery photo of the day'
I bet I'd end up eating humble pie!
