Here's a photo of one of the youngest members of Wigan Sailing Club braving the high winds and cold water on Scotmans Flash.

Looks like a lot of fun, provided he doesn't fall overboard.
Happy New Year to all on P-A-D.

Alan

p.s. I found a tin of Uncle Joe's Mint Balls in my Christmas stocking, a long, long way from Wigan, but they still taste of Wigan.

Well done Harry, lovely photo..... :-)
Courage is a word that comes to mind as well as brave!!! Cheers!!

Harry, surely you have younger member`s! How long have you been a member?
There`s a 4.31 video of sailing on SCOTSMANS Flash on :-

Cracking 'photo!

Comment by: Geographer on 31st December 2012 at 10:52

Here I am, correcting you again, Ernest!! Harry is correct, it's SCOTMANS Flash. Check Google maps, and look at the tourist sign on streetview. It's a commonly held mistake to call it Scotsmans.

Harry, good capture!!

Harry,a very interesting photograph .How many members are there , and if its not a pertinent question how much are the fees.
All the very best to all Wiganworlders for 2013.

Comment by: Loz on 31st December 2012 at 12:12

And Google Maps are ALWAYS correct?
But it is spelt 'Scotmans' on most hard copy maps, but is colloquially known as 'Scotsmans' among Wiganers.

Comment by: Geographer on 31st December 2012 at 13:05

Well, it's correct this time, as you seem to agree, Loz, but as a Wiganer I've always known it as Scotmans, so it's not all Wiganers!! Ernest uses Google maps, so I just pointed him there as a reference he knows. Sometimes he's a bit quick to criticise without checking first!!

Comment by: Harry C. on 31st December 2012 at 13:28

Tom, I'm not sure exactly how many members we have, fees vary, boat owner, non boat owner etc. visit our website (About Wigan Sailing club) and click on membership, why not pay us a visit on a Sunday any time from 11-30 onwards, bring your camera all are welcome drinks etc. available in the clubhouse.

Ernest we do have younger members but Conner in the photo was one of only two sailors out on the water that day, too windy for me! but you can see a photo of me sailing my boat ''Lydia'' on 19th July 2008 taken by Ron Dawber who is a former member of W.S.C.
Thanks all for your comments.
P.S. Anyone interested in trying sailing can come on August bank holiday and have go, you will be taken out in a suitable boat by a competant sailor and provided with a bouancy aid, and it's free so get down. you don't know what you're missing. H.

Nice photograph Harry. Good to see youngsters taking up an interest such as this. I like to stroll round the flashes - usually near Lowton and Leigh Sailing club. But I do not know which flash is which I am afraid.

Comment by: Harry C. on 31st December 2012 at 15:12

Sorry Ernest I forgot to mention I have been a member since mid 1970's H.

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 31st December 2012 at 15:16

Geographer, I put `scotmans flash` in search box above this photo and most items are listed as Scotsmans Flash.
An extract from Communicate, General :-
" Jack
The name is actually Scotmans flash, but plenty of folk call it Scotsmans flash and it were named after a Scotish bloke

Wasn't Scotmans named after a Scotmans farm. Scotman being a surname, rather than a Jock?
Could be well-wrong. But I think I've seen it debated on here.

Even the RSPB on Wigan Flashes:-
http://www.rspbliverpool.org.uk/Wigan%20flashes.htm
refers to Scotsmans Flash.
Harry, you didn`t say how long you`ve been a member.
A Happy New Year to everyone.

Comment by: Harry C. on 31st December 2012 at 15:21

Janice. Scotmans flash is off Poolstock Lane Wigan opposite the Tipping Arms Pub and is the only one with sailing boats on, with the old railway embankment on one side, and the Canal on another side. H.

Comment by: Neil Rigby on 31st December 2012 at 15:50

dustaf (25th Aug 2010) is almost certainly correct. "Scotman" is a Family name, just as "Pearson" is.[Note "Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Company was formed in 1874 in Ince" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancashire_Coalfield ]

Comment by: Skeets on 31st December 2012 at 22:21

Good action shot - looks like a Laser dinghy.

Comment by: Ellen on 1st January 2013 at 00:06

Didn't think it sounded like you, Ernest!

Comment by: Mick on 1st January 2013 at 00:45

Ernest it will be one of them computer boys from that messageboard section of Wiganworld who is impersonating you.

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 1st January 2013 at 04:31

Harry and Geographer, the caption on Ron Dawber`s 19th July 2008 P-a-D says Scotsman`s Flash !!

Comment by: Harry C. on 1st January 2013 at 11:55

Ernest,Google gives both spellings, the sign on Poolstock Lane directing you to the flash reads SCOTMANS, so call it what you want and end this discussion!
