OOOOOHH NO another boring comment ....

Comment by: Neil Rigby on 8th December 2012 at 11:24

I find the photo personally interesting. My cousin used to live in the street on the left, I used to visit the club on the right regularly and my mother used to work at Enfield Mill, which used to have an entrance on the left further up the street. The street seems not to have changed much over the last 40 years or so, but peterp's comment about satellite dishes is revealing as "the sign of the times." Thanks for the photo, bringing back old memories and an up-to-date perspective on Wigan World.

Drove down that street only yesterday.
My uncle Jim Garner used to have the Enfield Inn and my other uncle Wilf Garner used to have the newsagents further up on the opposite side to the pub. Jim is now dead but Wilf still lives in the area and is a regular at St Matthews church.

The club is still open but under newer management from years ago. My mum still lives in the next street (moved there - early 60's) and my brother lives in a side street off Enfield St. So I'm often in that neck of the woods.

A small car garage and filling station in the name of Brian Gaskell and son, based just on the left further up. The place was a tip inside the garage, but you could buy anything from there.

Hey Bradshaws Girl! Any more thoughts on our St Peter's school? I can't remember If we had school photos done. I have been trying to get into an archival part of the website but they don't seem to have one, any thoughts? Cheers, Lizzie

DH where have you been lately??

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 8th December 2012 at 22:37

Mick, I started motoring in 1954 on a Royal ENFIELD motorbike. Did you have motorbikes?

Comment by: Mick on 8th December 2012 at 23:35

Ernest I used to have a BSA 250

Comment by: Neil Rigby on 9th December 2012 at 00:08

My father had an AJS motorbike and used to ride along Enfield St. In addition to my cousin living off to the left, another uncle/aunt lived, more or less, opposite Gaskell's garage and my mother's family lived (at one time) at the top of Enfield St. I hope I haven't bored or sent certain people to sleep with this undoubtedly interesting information.

Comment by: Mick on 9th December 2012 at 08:03

I cant ever remember seeing a bus going down Enfield St.

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 9th December 2012 at 09:53

Thanks Mick, I should have said "used to be there"!

Comment by: britboy on 9th December 2012 at 14:58

Again an excellent reminder for the ex-pats, drove down Enfield St many a time.
What may appear boring to some is an archive of memories past for me.
Keep up the good work all photographers that kindly submit photos to Photo-a-Day of Wigan and district.

Mick I have never seen a bus going down Enfield St, but there is a bus stop there. I will find out.

Comment by: Al.C. on 10th December 2012 at 09:48

Thanks Carol, I have not walked down there myself for about 20 years.

Comment by: Paul Gaskell on 20th November 2021 at 22:30

Lived Enfield St from 1960 to mid 70s. No bus stop but used rail station mid 60s for a few steam years to school in Wigan. Dad, Brian, ran Enfield St garage.
