The Sportsman
Photo: David Barker (Nikon D3000 18-55mm VR lens)
I drove past there yesterday - it's gone!
Which part of Wigan is Leigh ?
Was this an opportune moment David? I had never been in there but it always seemed to be a nice pub.Shame.
Well it is a sad picture but hopefully all can be rebuilt and made great again. I may say the colours are really good. Cheers!!
The red traffic light looks Orange to me mmm so what does that tell you.
Hopefully the new building will look as good!! The new Sportsman will rise from the ashes and continue to be someone's local!! Cheers!
Leigh (pop. 43,000) is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, It is 4 miles (6 km) southeast of Wigan, Not been past here for some weeks and did not know about the fire. Such a shame that it was allowed to become derelict because it was a building with character.
Sadly, Lizzie, I doubt if a new pub will be built on the site. Pubs are closing almost daily over here (this one looks as if it was closed before the fire).
Yes its been demolished now Dave ,in fact the day after the fire on the 24th Oct ,because it was unsafe,Hi Ken hope your keeping well,I was on my way to my brothers he lives in Leigh took the camera I'd heard about the fire the day before. Thanks for your comments.
Leigh is in the same "Wigan" as other recent photos here of Haigh Hall, Standish etc. I.e Wigan Borough. If Leigh isn't appropriate here - neither are they :)
Interesting photo, David. Nice colours. Shame another pub bites the dust. I think Leigh is in the same part of Wigan Borough that Pennington Flash is, of which there are numerous photos on WW.
Which part of Wigan is Leigh? - Answer:The best part!
Didn't know it was already closed, I guess it is a sign of the times as it is over here there is not a lot of spare cash about!!! Now a nice walk through the lovely plantations is free and good for the soul eh Rev David? Thanks for setting me straight, cheers!!
Past this pub many times in my life but never got the chance to drink in it..And why does a pint cost so much now a days?? If we turn the clock back to the 30's the miners be on a riots with this price on a pint...!
Which part of Wigan? ME, and others of my kin, some of whom still live in Wigan. It doesn't matter where it is, it's sad to see something damaged by fire and being ignominiously swept away as if it never existed.
This pub had been closed for at least 5 years, probably longer.I believe there is a long term plan to build a road from this spot to the Leigh Sports Village.
Gone, and not before time. It was an eyesore. It has been derelict for at least for 4 years that I'm aware of. Pubs are closing down everywhere as we've all witnessed. Its to be hoped that the land will be put to good use.
