From Wikipedia :-

Pennington Flash Country Park is a 200-hectare (490-acre) country park located between Lowton and Pennington, Leigh in Greater Manchester, England.

The flash is a 70-hectare (170-acre) lake created at the turn of the 20th century by coal mining subsidence, mainly from Bickershaw Colliery, and flooding.[1] Now an extensive nature reserve with several bird hides and a network of tracks and footpaths, Pennington Flash Country Park is nationally renowned for its birdlife and is a classic example of natural regeneration. A variety of well-maintained paths cater to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Ideal for disabled persons, the Flash's hides have ramps for wheelchair access.

One of the premier birdwatching sites in North West England, over 230 bird species have been recorded on site including: Black-faced Bunting, Nightingale, Marsh Harrier, Spoonbill and Leach's Storm-petrel. Additionally, a wide variety of butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies can be spotted in the area.

Facilities include a small information centre, a nine-hole municipal golf course, a pay and display car park, a children's play area, picnic and recreation areas, bird watching facilities, fishing on certain shores, sailing, windsurfing and rowing through Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club, a mobile café and toilets.

As a wiganer, now living overseas i really do appreciate these photographs on photo a day..but have recently become dismayed with a few of the comments being left on the site..therefore i have come to the decision to just look at the photos & not to read the comments.. What a treat of a photo Dave, big sky big water who could ask for more. The day must be warm as the walker has her jacket tied round her waist. The light coloured paths really complement the green of the grass. Well done, my heart was lifted to high places, Thankyou!!!! Cheers

On a clear day in the distance above the L / H seat you can see Windy Arbour and the M6

well said Frank !!

Comment by: Gary on 30th September 2012 at 12:15

The comments are Wigan 'humour', Frank. Many Wiganers have led a hard life and its reflected in the way we talk and comment. Wiganers aren't wrapped in cotton wool as some people appear to be in other countries.
I've found my friends who live in Boston, USA to be very prudish compared to the English.
Obviously that doesn't apply to all of them!

I like the blue shape in the sky, tried to make something out of it but cant except for a funny shaped Cyprus.

Comment by: Jean F (Wales) on 30th September 2012 at 13:47

Love the picture, especially the clouds. The old saying was "if there`s enough blue in the sky to make an elephant a pair of trousers its going to be a nice day"
(Pity it doesn`t always work that way.)

Comment by: Jean F (Wales) on 30th September 2012 at 14:04

Well said Frank.
I`m a wiganer Gary and a lot of the comments on this site ,are not always "humerous"!

Comment by: Janet on 30th September 2012 at 14:39

Gary, you are right, it doesn't apply to all of them...My husband is from Boston, I lived there for 5 years after we were married and never came upon a prude in all the people I met.. In fact, a lot that I met were as mad and funny as a lot of my family and friends back in Wigan...Back to the p-a-d... great pic, as are all, p-a-d is the first place I go to, I love to see all the pics of Wigan and surrounding areas.. Thanks to everyone involved, for taking and submmitting all the pics...

Mick.........Looks a bit like Majorca too.
WHEN the weather is nice enough to sit in the garden I love to make out"things" from the clouds.I`m forever saying "look at that cloud"Poor hubby just raises his eyebrows!

Lovely photo Dave, and Ernest thanks for description.

Comment by: Gary on 30th September 2012 at 17:09

I've found that many in the Boston, USA area didn't understand Wigan humour. They thought I was being serious. Very literal in the way they think. Also, many hated it if I mentioned religion in a negative way. They'd clam up and sulk.
Very insular.

Jean ...You can play the same game with the black patterns on the side of cows.

Comment by: Bren on 30th September 2012 at 19:41

Jean F (Wales) i am glad there is someone who does exactly the same as i do !!! saw Winston Churchill the other day !!!

Comment by: Lizzie downunder on 30th September 2012 at 21:39

Thankyou to Ernest for the great description of this lovely place. I have never been there so it is good to know what the place is about. I live in a similar place here, large expanse of water, the bird life is amazing and we don't need an alarm clock!!!! Cheers

Lovely shot - used to work down Albert Pit and Wigan Junction - so probably contributed something to the subsidence in the area.
Frank etc - lighten up a bit - not all the comments are negative - dealing with a cross section of society, human nature will always come through. Some will be neg some will be positive.

Nice one Dave, I'm a member of Wigan Sailing Club at Scotmans Flash but have sailed on Pennington Flash a few times. Perhaps you could try Scotmans and the other flashes, it's quite picturesqe round there.
