I`ve just been looking at this church on Google Earth.
The fishponds are close by and many years ago they could be ice skated on jn the severe cold winters.

As a Wiganer (Wigganer?) who has spent 40+ years overseas I have learned so much about Wigan from the pictures and comments, thoroughly enjoy the banter and the knowledge and the humour on here.

Is it Gulliver`s catapult embedded in the tree?

Comment by: Mick on 2nd August 2012 at 15:00

Ernest I rode my bike on the fishponds when they where frozen over.

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 2nd August 2012 at 21:26

Jean, when did you live in Swinley Lane? I lived in Queensway from 1936 to 1958.

Comment by: Jean F (Wales) on 2nd August 2012 at 22:30

Well Ernest, what a surprise.I was born at 16 swinley lane.By 1940 we were in yewdale crescent until we left wigan in 1953.Queensway was our "main" street down for the bus "into town "and my walk every morning to go to gidlow school.

Ernest the one I have now is only 2 years old.

I,ve always thought this was a lovely church, and since we are discussing places of birth. I was born at 6 swinley lane in 1940

Skating brings back memories of the fish ponds, there used to be hundreds there on a freezing weekend, more than a few fell in to great amusment.

Fancy that! Jean. Look in Wigan Streets and there are 3 photo`s of Queensway. The house I lived in is the one on the extreme left, with the car in front of the front room window, in the third photo. I had a motorbike and wanted a car and garage , so mother and I (father died in 1953 aged 53) moved to Shevington in July 1958 and I`m still in same bungalow (Mother died in 1987 aged 87).
There are no photo`s of Yewdale Crescent, Wigan.

What another coincidence, Derek.
There are 3 photo`s of Swinley Lane in Wigan Streets.
My sister lived in Earl Street, Wigan from 1966 until she died on Christmas Day,2002.

Ernest, have seen the picture of queensway before ...brings back a lot of happy memories...standing at the top of the street waiting for my dad to come home from work. The building shown...sharps copiers ...used to be our local co-op.Yewdale cresc.was a cul-de-sac off langdale avenue.
