Sandyforth

Sandyforth
The Sandyforth mine today, three years after they started to fill it in. Taken from where the big hole used to be facing Wigan and Rivington. Rolling meadows and skylarks, rare birds these days, what a good job they did of the restoration.

Hello Roger, I put sandyforth on Google, then clicked on Wigan on the Internet which brought up an article in Stuff in wiganworld.
This article is about a proposal for a landfill site...There are links to two photo`s, of Sandyforth Pits 1 and 2.
These photo`s are in Photo`s of Wigan, Assorted, in wiganworld just above last one at bottom of page.

Hi magpie
Sandyforth was huge opencast between Windy Arbour and Downhall Green, they firm went bust and the council wanted to landfill it. But after a grant it was filled and landscaped, it now has good paths seats and brilliant views over town

Go over this area every week with dog's it's beautiful, sometimes we park the car on Ashton Rd, but generally walk from Winstanley through the wood's then under motorway bridge, lovely walk.

I used to just love walking around that area, in the days before the M6 was built.

Having grown up in Downall Green, I've walked all over that area more times than I could count, before the M6 and after......The last time I was over, that area was still a big mess, it's so good to see how great it is now.. Walking in the countryside is one of things I miss the most and views like that make me really homesick, but I love it ... Thanks Roger ..
