Us old uns don't half miss the man with a gun.

As an old un I agree with you Dave. Refer Places, Mesnes Park, Photo`s on page 3 to see the man with a gun.

Man with gun was put on garden compost heap in park when it was took down, saying it was not safe,Never hurt anyone in all the time it was there as far as i know, Brogan one of the Wigan councillors at the time was behind its demise, Just goes to show what kind of councillors Wigan as had over the years, TOTALLY USELESS.

Where is the "Unknown Soldier"statue,Has it upset someone?

Comment by: Harry C. on 11th June 2012 at 11:03

I agree with Harry K, if it was dangerous why not replace it with a replica, cost? look at all the new statues in town, and roundabouts!

They would rather pay out huge sums for monstrocities like the face I think.
They have all had a 'good taste' bypass... that is if they had any good taste in the first place.
Maybe they are not Wiganners and do it to annoy us.

Never mind the face tricia - it is not a monstrosity compared to what they have put up in Scholes. There are people trying to raise money to put the solider back. I remember him as a girl but never saw him with a gun in one hand a flag in the other. There are photos on Wigan World of it if you go into places and Mesnes Park. It was dedicated to the men from Wigan killed in the Boer War in South Africa and should be replaced with a replica. I believe they have tried to find it on the compost heaps in the park but I suspect once it was thrown there someone took it for scrap.
