Refurbished
Lovely pic Ron, can just see the kids roller skating down that path..
Nice to see. I have fond memories of this park from the 40's & 50's.I used to walk thro' 4 times a day...school & back.
I took a similar photo on a warm and sunny day (70 deg.F max.)--Tuesday 27th March`12.
Only the Shelter and Pavilion in your photo have been restored. Work still to be done on paths, grass etc.

It`s a great pity that the weather is poor for today`s Easter Extravaganza. Refer : http://www.wlct.org/Default.aspx.LocID-0cs00d00a002.Lang-EN.emID-970.cal-yes.EventID-14767.htm
Ernie the band stands been restored as well.
That is really so nice to see, brings back memories of a hot summer day in Mesnes Park, an ice cream wafer from the ice cream man on a bike with a big metal icebox attached to the front, people out in their Sunday best, green grass, blue skies, colourful flowerbeds...happy days.
Can someone take a pic of the bandstand please ?
i hope they pick what looks like rubbish up from the grass cause im not moving it for them.
I know that Mick, I took a photo of the bandstand too--was just referring to Ron`s photo. Have you read my comment on 8th April at 09:09 re your photo on 7th April?
Ernie if you go to where it says Forum then photos of Wigan there the 4th down under Dredger.
BTW the new Bandstand is officially being opened today by the grandaughter of Mr Higham who donated 2 Million towards it.
Great shot Ron and lovely to see the park well used. I do hope people keep it this way and that the vandals and litter louts stay away (or get caught). Must pay a visit - hope the bowling greens are still there.
You may well be right about it being litter dirty harry, I originally thought that maybe it was a bed of Primulas, by the way is that you in the green fleece in those bushes, just by the sapling between the two large trees.
Yes Mick, Billy Higham was an excellent benefactor to Wigan, and his legacy will live on due to his love of Brassbands, thanks Billy.
Yes, Janice, the 3 bowling greens are still there and I took a photo of those on 27th March`12 too !! My father took me to bowl on the bottom green when I was 13 years old in 1941 !!
Thanks Mick--found the photo`s which explain your photo.

Thankyou Ron for this latest picture showing the restored pavilion.Dont ever recall the little "bungalow" building which is also shown...What is that used for ?Also have enjoyed all the letters tonight about mesnes park.Such happy memories thankyou all.
Roy,Thanks so much for your message referring me to the 2nd April. Not knowing of the "new" market threw me .Now i can place where it is!Used to walk that way home every day as I lived off Mesnes rd.I remember "grimshaws?" dairy on the corner ....or am I off track again? Thanks again Roy.
Jean F (Wales), It`s a shelter Jean - keeps you dry when it`s raining and cool when it`s hot and sunny !!
Jean F(Wales)You are correct. It was Grimshaws Dairies on the corner of Mesnes Street and New Market Street
