I think that train was pulling the 'Mayfair special' to Wembley last Saturday - four hours!!
I could have got to Tenerife quicker

That's all well and good Scholes Malc, but it wouldn't have been half the fun of riding on that train. lol.

Rob, email your photos for Photo-a-Day to brian@wiganworld.co.uk

Nice shot! I photographed this engine doing "The Cumbrian Mountain Express" as it crossed the bridge at Carr Mill Dam early last month.

Another lovely picture for hubby He loves steam trains and there are quite a few of them here in mid wales .

Comment by: owdkewyed on 2nd September 2011 at 22:04

The brilliant black five, without doubt the most reliable of all the preserved locos running today, and probably the best 'do it all' steam loco ever to run on BR rails .......and they look bonny too.

What destination

Comment by: John W Winstanley on 3rd September 2011 at 08:29

Scholes Malc if that train was going to Wembley it must have taken the scenic route as it is on platform 5 which goes North you can see platform 4 opposite which is the line for the South as for the overhead cables a good use of Photoshop perhaps

Many thanks to David Barker and Cyril.

Comment by: Bob on 3rd September 2011 at 11:36

Can you please explain how Photoshop works, John W Winstanley, it would be interesting to know?

Comment by: Dave on 3rd September 2011 at 14:55

Train is facing south at platform 3.

Comment by: Bill Eatock on 3rd September 2011 at 17:19

I reckon Platform 4 is the one for trains going south Dave. I'm certain the train is heading north.

Comment by: John W Winstanley on 3rd September 2011 at 19:36

Hi Bob in Photoshop you have a number of tools which you can remove unwanted items in a photo, to gho through them all here would take too long but suffice to say with enough time you can make most photo's better as for which way the train is heading it is North bound on platform 5

Comment by: Andy Strickland (woman-less) on 4th September 2011 at 03:59

Dave, Platform 3 is a bay platform at Wigan you burk !

Love, Andy.

Thanks for all the comments folks, they are appreciated. To settle any arguments, this was the first of 3 Cumbrian Mountain expresses coming from Liverpool, probably the one you photographed are Carr Mill Dave. It was heading north to Carlisle. Because I have a blind daughter who loves steam I was on the nearest platform (5) to give her a full dose of all the aromas so I was shooting against the light hence the pale sky to keep the engine and crew in correct exposure, it had the happy side effect of "burning out" the overhead cable.

Hi erm, ive noticed you have taken a lot of photos of steam trains passing through wigan. How do you know when they are going to be passing through because id like to witness one passing :) thanks !

Comment by: John Morris on 29th September 2011 at 10:13

Hi Aimee, Google "Steam Railtours". There is one coming through Wigan on Saturday at 10 o'clock....that is if they don't change the time as they sometimes do.
