Old railway bridge
Not too sure of this one? Did trains go over the bridge or under it, or indeed both?
good clear photo, passed this bridge
a few times.
Lost me with this photo is it in A-in-M
The bridge is located about half way between Ashton heath and Golborne; it carried the Wigan to St Helens central railway which went through Haydock Park and Haydock before terminating at St Helens Central Station which is now the magistrates Court and Birchley St car park.
Good photo Tony, bet it's a bit spooky in the dark.
Its Wigan to Lowton and Glazebury line that finished in 1964.
Look on Google earth.
The line was originally for services between St Helens and Lowton St Mary’s calling at Haydock, Ashton in Makerfield, Haydock Park and Golborne, a connection was required at Lowton St Mary’s for Glazebrook and Manchester Central. Passenger services were withdrawn on 3rd march 1952. Colliery trains and Haydock Park specials continued to use, the line was finally closed in 1965.
I remember travelling from Haydock to Wigan Central station when I was a lad, hence the reason I originally said the Wigan/St Helens line. As Les says check it out on Google Earth you can clearly see the line meets the main line in the direction of Wigan
So I,ve walk over that bridge a few times in the past with the dog, infact we walked over the heath to Haydock park then on to Golborne today but didn't think to look for the bridge
Thomas says Choo Choo !!
