Where is this?
Is it near Orrell Post? I seem to recall seeing it when I was over visiting my sister who lives in Orrell. No doubt Brian will confirm.
Dicconson St, henry.
Upper Dicconson Street, close to the town centre.
When it was Gems some years ago, it was managed by someone called Ernie, is he still around?
Must be confusing it with something else then!
I went in there a few times when I lived in Upper Dicconson st 35 yrs ago.. Can't remember what it was called then..
I went to St Johns School which is (was) behind it on Brick kiln lane. In the 50's and 60's it was, I believe, a doctors surgery. I'm willing to be corrected on this.
I think Dr Graham and his family lived in this house in the 1950.s and 1960.s The surgery was round the corner. I was at The Hollies school with Susan Graham and her younger sister Wendy. Apologies if wrong.
Barry Philbin and his wife moved from the Royal Oak in Standishgate to this establishment and I am led to believe that they called it Gems after their daughter Gemma.
Hi, This was Dr Laithwaite's surgery when I was a lad. Remember going there with my parents. You used to go in through a door at the side which can be seen bricked up in this picture. Was it not La Frog restaurant a few years ago?
Stu
Hi mugglewig La Frog was about 4 buildings further down the hill towards the market. Last time I visited Wigan from Canada it wasn't La Frog any more
If I'm not mistaken it became a pub in the early 1980's as "Gem's" and became a popular component pub of "Doin' t'Lane".
Now revamped as a "15" and they've done a pretty good job with it.
