I now live 8000 miles away from WIGAN and I am horrified with what I have seen opn this site in the past few weeks.
Something had to be done with this building Alan - it was a mess inside. If you look at a lot of these "Magnificent" old buildings all that was well built was the frontage - the rest was thrown together with cheap materials.

Ive always said that about Wigan Town hall.
Nothing new there, those lovely posh buildings for which Bath is famous , only the fronts were built by Woods, father & son, the rest were done by jobbing builders - you should see some of the backs!
I was in Burnley and Blackburn last week and there old town centre buildings are made from stone all the way around an are still in very good condition.
The building in the picture used to be the old "Chest Clinic". I remember having to go there in the late fifties and was always surprised that the X-Ray machine was on the third floor, especially seeing that the majority of people who went there had a job to make it up the step through the front door?
This building was also a dentists where they sent you from school in the 50s The dentists there knew how to make you scream out in pain, they should have been sent to prison for what they did, I know i was one of their victims,
Yes I remember going there, to the dental clinic in the 50's, it was on the first floor with a waiting room, a surgery, and a recovery room, where we sat at a long basin after having extractions with gas.
Do you remember the red rubber bibs ?
