Was trying to place this pic. Just now noticed what I believe to be a sign pointing to the Wiend, so that's my answer! So-- another question from a 40-plus year ex-pat, can anyone enlighten me about the origin and meaning of the word Mesnes? I grew up in Holland Moor, and would have known the word for most of my life, but never thought of questioning it until a few days ago; now it's "bugging" me!

galloways pies are rubbish-Hollands pies R best

Comment by: Roy on 15th November 2009 at 12:31

Ellen, the word Mesnes or 'the mesnes' comes from the French demesne, meaning land adjoining an important building,eg hall, manor, rectory etc.

Jazz.Thats why Galloways have 20 or more shops in and around the Wigan area.A Wiganer knows a good pie lad!! Sounds to me like you come from Haslingden[the home of Hollands bakery]

Roy, Thanks for the help;I should have made the connection, as a formerly bilingual person; I suppose I am really getting old if not yet senile!

anyone remember Laces pie shop in standishgate? best pies i ever tasted..closely followed by heatons..in my opinion no pies in wigan these days comes close.

Comment by: Jean F (Wales) on 17th March 2011 at 22:14

The best M&P pies came from VOSES opposite Mark williams in standishgate in the 50`s Mmmmmm I can still taste them !!

Comment by: Jerry M on 24th September 2016 at 19:11

Voses was a top pie shop especially the cow heel pies , but in the 60s the best pies in town were from Watkins in Mesnes st, Greens butchers out of old market supplied them with top quality meat .
