Photo-a-Day (Sunday, 19th October, 2008)
Wigan Pier Quarter
The Mills look like places of worship. All my own ancestors seem to be from cotton or coal and looking at photographs such as this I feel united yet strangely detached.
Nice to see all the greenery that is around town in these roof top photos you don't notice it the same on foot, also the clarity of the air. I can remember as I suppose quite a lot of folks also do, the thick fogs and smogs that hung around for days on end at this time of year especially in the hollows of Lower Wallgate and Poolstock areas around the water.
Nice photo, I like the restoration they are doing in this area, should look great when it's all finished in 5 years or so.
The 'go outdoors' stands on the site where Adelaide/Melbourne street was, before the area was flattened eons ago. Many of my ancestors lived there. It ties in nicely with some victorian shots I have seen. Thanks
thats an amazing view of the town
