John Gerards Estate Office
Photo: Tony Haslam (Kodak Easyshare DX7630)
Always something "oldie worldie" about black & white buildings.
Tony, that was not an 'entrance to Lord Gerards mansion' as you say. The entrance to the estate was, as it is now, the gateway to Ashton in Makerfield Golf Club at Ashton Cross. In fact, the hall was not called Garswood Hall, as is a popular misconception, but 'New Hall'.
Yes I am aware that the entrance for the Lord of the Manor was at the entrance to the now Golf Club. This is where his Estate office was and was probably used by tradesmen etc. Whilst you could get to his estate I did not mean it was the entrance for Dignitories and the like. Sorry if I have mislead with my wording.
Although, Tony, I wouldn't like to walk it with a hole in my shoe.
The previous comment, about walking it with a hole in my shoe, wasn't intended for this picture. It was intended for the October 13th picture and has been added there. Sorry.
The entrance to Lord Gerards estate was from warrington road, the one of mill lane (golf club)was for want of a beter word the back gate suplies, tradesmen visitors, but if you were well up in the world ie another lord or duke you would be greeted at the main entrance.
