A thousand pities this building has been let fall into dereliction. Shame on
Wigan Councils, over the decades, for allowing this to happen. If the building couldn't be saved at least some of the wall artwork could have been found a new home. The likes of such buildings will never be seen again and should have been cherished for generations to come.
It beggars belief that such a building is being allowed to decay-- is there no civic pride left from our town council?
I agree with above comments, shame on Wigan Council for letting this beautiful old building go the way that others have gone. This is part of our Towns grand history, it really made me feel so sad looking at these pictures. Thank you to the person that took them.
My grandfather is Gordon Banks. Thank you for this I am a painter illustrator in Canada with two books already published. I shall add this legacy art to a new one and pay homage to this great historical place and make it well known.
Sadly, it has nothing to do with Wigan Council as this property was, and still is, privately owned by a family by the name of Bankes who lived there for a while when it was still in good condition. Then, they found themselves no longer able to pay for the upkeep so just abandoned it. Don't know if they tried to sell it.
I believe the Hall was sold to Dorbcrest homes with a view to converting it into apartments. Unfortunately, as in the case of many old and beautiful buildings, it has just been left to rot.
