Wigan Album

I love these photos, Ron! When I worked in Debenhams, (1973-1976), Wigan was still heaving with people on a Saturday afternoon just like on the photo. Hope you've got some more!

It was buzzing in the 90s.. loads of shops and a great nightlife!
Now in the days it’s full of drunks and druggies and at night you can’t use the toilets due to copious amounts of people “powdering their noses!”
There need to be a weekend dispersal order permanently in place to stop people just hanging around and putting people off from using the town as their own personal dossing place and toilet!!
14 years of Tory austerity have ripped the heart out of the town!!

It’s amazing to see how attractive and vibrant Standishgate was in the late 1980s. I’m assuming the photo was taken shortly after Standishgate was pedestrianised. I do recall that buses still drove up towards Market Place whilst the new Hallgate bus station was under construction.
