There was a Morton’s shop in Vauxhall Rd. I remember it well. Big slabs of butter on the counter and stiff blue bags containing sugar. The old fashioned grocers were the best.
There was one in Hindley too, Chapel Green Road I think.
Helen, the Mortons in Hindley was near the bottom of Market Street. My grandma used to work there in the 50s and 60s. You're probably thinking of Morgans on Chapel Green?
A very interesting article, Ron....thankyou. I remember the Mortons branch near Ince Bar, corner of Ince Green Lane/ Lord Street.
There was one at Bryn cross, the manager was Jack Houghton who lived in Landgate,l used to ride the order bike, came a cropper a few times if l remember rightly.
There was a Mortons shop in Knowsley Rd., Beech Hill. I seem to remember that all their Branches were art deco and identical from the outside.
I remember Morton's grocers, especially the ones on Ince Bar and junction of Ince Green Lane / Manley Street. There were several around Wigan and district,my late Dad hadcworked for them on leaving school.x
My Aunty May was the manageress at the Ince Green Lane/Manley Street shop - must have been sometime in the 50's/early 60's.
I remember the one athe corner of Turner street and Greenough street, opposite the old post office !
I remember a Mortons in Darlington Road East in the 1940’s. As far as I can recall if you turned right at the top of Clarington Grove it was situated in the block of houses on your right hand side. Perhaps nearby where today we find the hair and beauty salon “Decide Ya Vibe"
There was,a Morton’s shop on Wallgatem
There was a Morton's in Standish. It was roughly opposite where Tim's La Mamas takeaway is now. They too had the big slabs of butter that you paid for according to the weight. I remember being bought a can of pop from here and the Beatles were all over boxes that they came in. You had a member of the group's face on the side of the can, I think mine was Ringo :)
WN1 What would they be worth now????
One in spring view as well.
I know admin, 'imagine' having all 4, unopened. They'd be worth a few bob now. I seem to remember the George Harrison one was a bit rare.
