This side chapel in the North aisle of St Matthew's Church was created as the church's WW2 Memorial. The names of the 22 who are commemorated here are inscribed on the carved wooden board visible through the entrance arch of the screen. The frame of the board carries carvings of the badges of the men's units. Two of those named are also commemorated at the Mount Zion Chapel on Ormskirk Road....

When i went to Highfield school 1949-53 there was a war Memorial Plaque
in the school hall of pupils who had attended there and lost thier lives in the war. David do you know what became of that when the school was knocked down.

Thank you Rev.David Long for sharing the photo, i mention this because all those years ago it is were i was Christened ,and i also attended both the infants school as far back as 1951,(i see it's finally gone now) I then went on to attend HIGHFIELD SECONDARY MODERN,leaving to seek work at Christmas time in1962 . I originate from HALF-WAY-HOUSE and also walked with the procession's almost every year too. I have very fond memories of ST.MATHEWS and always will, again thankyou.

Wiganer - this is the first time I've heard about such a memorial. It is not recorded on any of the war memorial sites I'm aware of. It would be good to have confirmation of its existence - from the pics in the Album of the school, it appears to be one built between the wars - so it would be a WW2 memorial.

I can see St Matthews church from where I live in Up Holland, I always think it is a very attractive looking church but have never been inside it. Will try to get there one day.

Is one of the names in mount zion, Richard Speakman?

The name's the same - the person isn't! But it is YOUR Richard Spearman - see the image of the board.

I should have looked more closely at the time - but I've since discovered that the screen is inscribed to the memory of Colonel Cuthbert LBH Blundell, who died in 1947, and is not actually part of the war memorial fittings.
