This book was produced in 1968 in memory of Edward Butler of St Catharine's Church, who died on April 26th 1967. It contains the names of 401 men from the Scholes area, or connected to St Catharine's, who served in WW1 - with a cross beside the names of the 165 who were killed.

My record of it on the Imperial War Museum's Register is here:
https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/87171
It includes a list of the names - but not images of the pages. I did take pics of all the pages, in order to create the list - so if you want a copy of the page your dad is on, let me know.

My great-grandfather came from leader street more or less next to st Catherine's, and served on the Somme. Hes was killed in action on the 23/4/1917 during the Arras battle's. He's commemorated on the wigan town centre cenotaph. I've been on the link David has posted and have found two soldiers with the name John Howarth. Is there also a memorial plaque inside the church?

Ph - yes, there is a memorial inside the church -
https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/45386
Unfortunately, the images are not presently on display on the IWM website - a major update over the summer resulted in 6,000 of the 140, 000 images on the site not being transferred with the data - my images for this being among them. They'll reappear eventually, I hope.
Yes, there are two John Howarths listed among those killed in the Book of Remembrance. One appears at the start of the list of names beginning with H, and the other appears at the end of the list - among six names. All of the others appear on the church memorial - and there is only one John Howarth on the memorial - which leads me to think that the second appearance is an error. In confirmation of this, I have an image of a list of names which looks as if it was used at Remembrance Services for the names of those on the memorial to be read out. There is only one John Howarth on this list.
The units the men served with appears against most of the names in the Book... but not against John Howarth's name, unfortunately.
Throughout the Book of Remembrance the names of one or two men appear at the end of the lists every now and again, which is a bit of a puzzle, since it was only created in 1968, and there seems to be no attempt to add additional names to the list. The scribe must have nodded off now and then to have displaced those names.
If you want copies of the pics of his name in the Book, or on the memorial, let me know.

Dear Sir
I am writing a book on the history of the 5th Manchester Regiment (WW1). I am attempting to make it as personable as possible. To do so I have created a database that contains over 3000 men that served with the 5th Manchester battalion in some capacity. This will allow me to name the men at specific points in time and add their backstory.
Would you be kind enough to send the images to me so i can add the information to the database? In return I will send you the service records of each man listed. This will be in a searchable PDF. The service records have been created from the records available on Ancestry and FindMyPast, the local , regional and national newspapers, the Wigan Archive and personal corrospodance found in other archives. I am currently studying my masters degree in WW1 studies with Birmingham and my thesis will form part of the book.
