This locomotive is Ex L.M.S. 46233 " Duchess Of Sutherland " hauling the
London to Glasgow " Royal Scot " train. It would have passed through
Wigan North Western thousands of times from new in the 1930s to the
1960s when it was withdrawn. There was also a train later in the day in
each direction called " The Mid-day Scot ".

The Royal Scot number 46100 passes through Wigan on the 20th July 2022.

There was also a train called the Caledonian Scot which went through twice a day

This must have been the engine that my sister & I used to watch go by. My Grandfather always called it The Flying Scotsman....in a sense he was correct...it flew by ! On a visit to the area I found all the land we used to run across from St Clements Rd to the railway fence & crossing is built on now.

It certainly is Helen, a housing estate was built when the school shut. There's an iron bridge where the crossing used to be. Peter, what time does the Scot come through Wigan on Wednesday ?

Which train did we watch go past whilst standing on the fence at the back of Ashfield House in Standish?

I think LMS had about 70 Scot class locomotives and any would bear the Royal Scot Emblem on the front but they all had different wheel arch badges. Royal Scots Grey 46101, The Black Watch 46102, Royal Scots Fusilier 46102 etc, Number 46100 has wheelarch badge, Royal Scot. There is a you tube video of it in Wigan last July on a Crewe to Carlisle Fellsman trip. It should leave Wigan at 8.20am this year. The Flying Scotsman was a LNER east coast equivalent. I never knew much about them when I was 9 years old but what memories of such magnificent machines.

This engine was one of the Coronation class engines of which there were 38 and I was lucky enough to see all of them come through Wigan in the late 50's. Perhaps the finest engines ever built. Luckily Duchess of Sutherland was preserved and still runs today.

Thank you for your comments regarding the Coronation class Locomotives.
Not being a local, I only got to see these handsome machines on my visits
to Wigan North Western on a Saturday. I probably saw about 25 of them.

Cheers, Ray.
