You have already put this photograph on the site a couple of years ago?
There's no harm done Wiganer..some people may not have seen it before, and that includes myself.
This shop on the corner of Ormskirk Road and Smethurst Lane was Kellys
Off LIcence for many years from the late 1970s. I think it is now a Premier
franchise shop.
The TK Bedford lorry in Smethurst Lane beside the shop is from Bartons,
a wholesale supplier of beers, wines and spirits from Ashton In Makerfield.
I am quite certain that Bartons are still supplying alcoholic drinks today.
Cheers, I will have a pint of bitter.
Wiganer. I’m just checking through the 30,658 photos on this site to make sure you’re correct.
I was born in the late 70s and grew up in Pemberton, before moving across town in my teens. I only remember this shop as Kelly's which was extended into the property next door. As someone has already said, I believe it is now under a Premier convenience store franchise.

Did they sell champagne ? Looks like someone's popped a cork in the foreground .
Jack save you looking, it's on under 'Pemberton'
The L stands for Lily, a female running an off licence must have been unusual for the times ?
Whatever ,it's still a good photo and like one has said it's doing no harm to post it again ,thank-you ....
Hi ,John, Have you got a relative named David? I worked with him back in 70/71, Im sure his Mum had the off licence then. He had a Lambretta s x 200. We both worked at Hellers in Town..
Similar to Open All Hours. There was an off licence at the bottom of John St. Scholes in the fifties run by a lady . She wore a white cotton overall and a turban to match. I can still remember the smell of ale but can't remember her name. I was sent with a jug sometimes, at only 8 years old. I dipped my finger in the liquid and shuddered, I never did that again.
It's just come to me the name of the off licence was Pagetts. It was at the top of Cambridge St. A spotless shop.
Ray, the bedford lorry is parked in Howard St, not Smethurst Lane
wigwam...Yes, of course it is Howard Street. Next time I have asquint in
my local A-Z map book, I will make sure that I have my glasses on.
Thank you, Ray.
Bartons are still going in a big way now, they run out of Potters farm on Bryn Rd,the farm used to be run by Harry Pimblett, the chap delivering for Bartons looks like Tommy, who used to be the lowloader driver for Gaskell Borthers.
I've never known Barton's, in Ashton, to be known as 'J. Barton & ....'
Could the truck not be Barton's of Ince, delivering pop?
Did Harry pimblett ever get married knew him from way back
Thanks for posting this photo John, this time it has got a lot more excellent comments and stirred a lot of folks memories. Ignore the pedantic and negative commenters and keep posting, it's good to see photos of Pemberton.
You may well be right about the J Barton's at Ince Bruce, the Barton's at Ashton according to a web search was T & J T Barton
Wiganer, if you have a problem with it then don't post.
Ste Eccles' yes David is my brother and you are correct about him having a Lambretta and working at Hellers. My mum shared joint ownership with her two sisters Edna Charnock and Lilian Kelley along with my Nan Lily Bradshaw who was the origianal owner.
Tommy Barton is still going in Ashton.
Apologies to Wiganner for posting the same photo twice but first time was many many years ago and a lot more people have joined WW since then and that is the reason I posted again.
Dave on lancs bmd
Henry pimblett married mary barton in 1950
John Belshaw..I thought I was right,(over fifty years ago). He was a couple of years older than me (took me to a few mad house parties around Pem,Orrell) ha ha..
