would have been more than a good weeks wage in those days.
I remember years ago if someone died in the street there would be a collection at every house. Also curtains would be drawn until after the funeral.. We don't see that nowadays. A lot of customs have died( forgive the pun) that used to happen, along with the coffin - underneath the window, I remember when my grandmother died- that's where she was placed. I do think funerals are a lot more expensive than previously, even allowing for what the money was worth in those days.
Veronica. It astounding the amount of money that a wedding costs nowadays, compared to years ago.
I agree Albert. Church weddings were just as nice in latter days, with receptions in a pub or club and going away for a week somewhere nice. Or even moving into your own home, although it was easier to get a mortgage in days gone by. That was more important than a big wedding. Now some go to the other side of the world to get married. Astronomical costs now compared to what used to be- daft really, just for a day.
Thanks Mick LD. My great grandfather was a Charles Taylor, who, I am told, lived to old age.Possibly the Chas Taylor who payed this receipt. I have no knowledge of the John Taylor mentioned in the burial register. The daughter of Charles Taylor, Ellen, was my grandmother. She married a George Smith who was killed on The Somme in the first world war, never seeing his second daughter Phyllis, my mother. Ellen Smith passed away in January 1973 aged 81 and is buried in St Mathews Churchyard, Highfield beside two of her grandchildren, Peter age 13 months(1943) and David age 10 days(1946). Before I was born(1949) but two of my siblings!
