Service number 10856,Rank Pte. 6th Battalion Border Regt.Reuben entered the theatre of war in Gallipoli on 18 July 1915 and was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
The Silver War Badge Rolls show he enlisted on 13th Aug 1914 and was discharged 22 June 1917 under Kings Regulations Para 392 xvi, no longer fit for war service. His badge had the unique number of 209480 on the reverse.
The 6th Border regiment was formed from volunteers at Carlisle in Aug 1914 as part of K1, the first of Kitcheners new armies. They trained at Belton park, Grantham and were inspected by King George V on Hankey Common at the end of May before being shipped out to Galipoli from Liverpool at the end of June.
Unfortunately, Reuben's death as a result of his Gallipoli injury wasn't spotted by Fred Holcroft in his book on the Campaign, 'Just Like Hell'. As he says in the introduction to his list: 'Over 400 local men died during the Dardanelles Campaign. Here are the names of those it has been possible to discover.... If there are others I apologise. They made the same sacrifice.'
How can you get the list of men who had the silver war badge or the brass war badge. 5th batt wigan
