'Prinny Royal', Wigan NW Station mid 50s

Up from the south, Sunday morning when this particular loco sped through Wigan Station, 'Princess Victoria' was on the nameplate. The action would start on the platform when a shout went up from one of the trainspotters - something like this: 'double amber . . . green!! Then the bell started ringing, heralding the approach of the engine you knew would not be stopping at Wigan.

Thirteen were built at Crewe Works, between 1933 and 1935 and two, 6201 Princess Elizabeth and 6203 Princess Margaret Rose are preserved.

What a great photograph. I never was lucky to see one of these in service. Lovely engine, but far too many technical problems.
