Shortly after this picture was taken there was a major extension ,adding
function rooms and extra bedrooms(aprox.,1958-1959).When complete the new section was opened by Lord Brocket ,chairman of Walkers Brewery. The opening of The Brocket was the death knell for The Grand Hotel ,prior to that The Grand had the sway of Wigan, it's very sad to see the state of the old building now.

I am happy to stand corrected if I'm wrong, but surely it isn't on Wigan Lane?

It's on Mesnes Road and Holme Terrace not Wigan Lane.

It's on Mesnes Rd. My cousin lives just down the way from it.

If there was any doubt about it's location, on the wall at the extreme right of the picture there is a street name reading Mesnes(presumably road)

The Brocket was a lovely pub years ago in 1975 had my wedding reception there very nice and at the time was the place to go, good food and drink, very enjoyable

I had my wedding reception there too, in 1968. The Brocket in those days was 'the' place to be seen.

Art,Lord Brocket officially opened The Brocket on the 10th. of October 1957 ,he also opened the extension somen time later 1958-1959, I don't know the exact date for that ceremony . As mentioned in earlier comment he waschairman of Wallkers brewery at that time . I worked for Lowes of Wigan at the time,Lord Brocket visited the site whilst we carry out some of the Furnishings, he seemed a decent sort of chap.

I remember the Brocket being built I used to visit my Grandparents who lived in heeley street behind the Brocket Arms. When I turned 18 I started work their I had been working at the Rams head in Tarleton for three years. The Brocket was a three star Hotel then I have many fond memories of staff and patrons

can anyone tell me the exact year that JD Weatherspoons took over the Brocket I think it was 1990's

Comment by: Elizabeth Webb on 6th July 2021 at 16:01

It it so sad to see the Brocket now, I had my wedding reception in 1982 it was the place to go. Then hotel was majestic now it more like a flew pity. We stayed there last weekend no access for disabled people very dirty cold breakfast. the only thing is the staff very friendly. Very bad move letting Weatherspoon to by this hotel and definably will not be staying there again.
