Will a railway buff please tell us how the excursion train got from Hindley to Blackpool?
I think it went through Haigh Hall Plantations, but I'm sure someone with more knowledge will comment soon. It's just that I have a friend who lived in Hindley as a child, and I'm sure she told me they travelled from Hindley South via Haigh.
I think they may have travelled from Hindley to Wigan and picked up the Blackpool connection at Wigan.
Its going from Orrell Pem Ince Hindley and next stop will Bolton and then on to the Preston line.
Maybe
Using the inflation calculator in today's terms 25p is about £11, Does anyone know present day costs of equivalent rail journey?
The Route this train would most certainly have taken after leaving Hindley would be to Crow Nest Jctn and then the line, closed on the 9th September 1969.to Horwich Fork Jctn via Hindley & Blackrod Branch Jctn and then onto Blackpool through Preston as today.Incidentally the price today of a off peak Day Return ticket from Hindley to Blackpool via Wigan is twelve pounds ten pence.
very good comments but if done today it would have left the main down fast at kirkham turned left into the fields and continued till becoming the M68.last i knew the gents bog was last remnant of central? Great bit of history,ta for sharing.
In the 50's we would buy a ticket at Northwest Station, for the Saturday "passion flyer",to Blackpool/Return, including entrance to the Winter Gardens for 4s-6d...18.30 out...23.45 return
JohnB - the same journey today would cost anywhere between £11-40p and £13-70p.
Many thanks Mick for that interesting information.
Correction to my submission of 1st January. The line between Crow Nest Jctn & Horwich Fork Jctn closed on the 9th September 1968 not 1969 as stated.
