Ron, are there any photo's of H.H Timberlake in the brochure?
Hi Bert, no these are the only photographs
These photos bring back memories, I worked at Timberlakes many many moons ago as a typist in the sales office, but it was at the one down wallgate, the sales manager was terrible to work for and often came back after lunch quite intoxicated. As a 16 year old he scared the life out of me.
Timberlake's moved to Wallgate around the early 1970s, where Go Outdoors is now, B&Q later took over the site. Wallpaper Supplies is now in the old Timberlake's on Library Street.
Yes it would be the early 70's when I worked there, but I also remember the showrooms in Library St. I kind of have a recollection of them still having something going in in Library St at the time I worked there. Maybe they still owned the building.
Thinking about it did they not also have the building on the opposite side of the road in Libarary St which is now the carpet shop.
Chris, the carpet shop is now where the top photograph was taken.
didnt Wigan players Trevor Lake & John Winton have a car showroom there as well - but was theirs on Millgate? - I remember the challenge cup being on display in the shop window so that must have been 1965
Thanks Ron, when I worked there I am sure they still had that showroom where the carpet shop is, when a vehicle was sold I had to organise the dewaxing of it before it was delivered to the customer and I think they still stored some of the vehicles in that showroom.
A couple of months back the corner of the building on the bottom photo, (nearest Mc Nulty's) was renovated, the old Timberlake's sign was exposed in the process.
I was only talking about that salesman yesterday. he was very often in the pub. and he allways wore a dicky bow tie I think his first name as Reg
thank you very much for the photos, ive been hoping for some from the 30s for a long time.
its fantastic to see the corner up back to how ive done it, and the alcove for the enterence ,also the glass windows from floor to top on the first floor excatly how they are going back to be for displays.
all I need now is a picture from the 1906 of the ground floor under the offices and a war time picture of the building
If you look on PLACES. LIBRARY STREET. there is a later photo of the same view.
