Look at the lady brushing the front of her house. If only our streets could be as clean as they were then.
Now this one has always confused me... is this looking towards Ince Bar... or Hindley? I do know where it was, but I just can't sort this photograph out.
Another larger version of one posted by Ron Hunt.
evelyn when i was little we uesd to take potatoe peelings to that lady for her live stock that she kept in a pen at the back of her house she gave us a hand full of sweets great times
i think its looking towards wigan from hindley the road is raised up in the distance
Its looking towards Ince bar and Wigan, the lorry on the right is owned by Joe Miller coal man, who also ran the Crown pub which the lorry is parked outside of, its now the site of Vartys funeral directors, to the left is the Wagon Works offices (there is a photo of that on here somewhere from the opposite side of the road)a couple of doors further towards Hindley, where the lady is sweeping was a shop owned by Mrs Hurst, who I believe was the sister of Walter Hurst the cobbler and clog maker, for a time I lived in Brown street before they were demolished, she gave piano lessons as well as running the shop, I was a pupil of hers for a while, but soon gave it up as a bad job.

This photograph was obviously taken for the view but how wonderful that the one person pictured holds such a vivid memory for you.
Sweeping the front of the house was a regular occurrence back then.I can see my mother now sweeping outside our house, then she would cease because our next door neighbour Auntie Maggie(she wasn't related but that is what I always called her)had come out to clean her front. And there they would enjoy a natter and catch up with all the local gossip.
Then they would both decide that they would have to go because "I have so much to do" !!!!!
Bless them both
Hurst's shop was owned by the parents of my friend Elizabeth; Walter Hurst, the well-known clogger from Hindley, was her cousin. My late brother Ronnie, (19 yrs. my senior), pointed out to me on this photo, (which I have seen before), where he once found half-a-crown at the side of the road. He was born in 1933, so can you just imagine the wealth of 2/6d to a little lad in the 30s/40s?! How many pictures could he have watched at The Bug picture-house for that?!
Great photo. When did the crossings go?. I was born in 1950 and lived on Manchester Rd but I don't remember them.We used to go to the park a lot but as a kiddie never remembered the crossing. Also I used to have to sweep our front as well.
in the distance is the walmsley arms pub (now Royces Gym).
the line you are on about went off to the right and crossed Belle green lane as shown in the other picture and then on to the top place (Kirkless) the line went off to the left and eventually ended up at Springs Branch.
you can still walk the line going left but the going off to the right it has been built upon
The lady sweeping the front of the house could be my great grandmother Mary Leyland she lived and died in the house about 1953,i have seen this pic before and showed it to relations who say it is most likely to be her, my mother was born in {little}Darlington st the st before that row of houses, her father was John Leyland son of Mary.
