Photograph of Jack Cunliffe holding the R.L. cup as the team arrive back in Wigan. I was told by Jack's son Jeff, that the small boy stood behind Jack is Jack's other son.

Ron. I was at WGS with Jeff Cunliffe - he was a very good Rugby player himself at school although of course (even though it was Wigan !!) we were not allowed to play League at all but had to make do with the other code. Interestingly in the same team and also a very good player was John Hilton son of Jack Hilton - another Wigan and Great Britain RL player who later became a Director and Chairman of the Wigan RL Club.

That looks like Queens Street and the North West Station railway Arches.

Great photo.
Would that be where Wigan Central pub is now in Queen Street?
The child in the photo I think would be Jack's other son, David.

Rich is right - the bricked up Railway Arches are now Wigan Central Pub and the double decker bus in the background is on Wallgate and going under the Railway Bridge adjacent to North Western Station.

Jeff's info.
The 'head' over my dad's left shoulder is my 11 yr old brother's...... My nan was looking after us and he disappeared..... He went to Wigan N. W. and told the policeman 'that's my dad'...... We saw him when the coach passed us on Woodhouse Lane!!!

In his playing days Jackie Cunliffe lived in Cross Street;
a small street off Caroline Street, close to Wigan town Centre.
A fantastic Full Back.

Jack's parents lived in Coss St but I don't believe he ever lived there. After a brief spell with the in-laws in Cypress Rd. in Pemberton he lived from the late 1940s until his death in 1973 in Mort St. opposite St. Andrews Church.
