ALMOND BREWERY F.C.

I lived 100 yards from the J.B. Almond brewery for 24 years, from being born to getting married. I 'served my time' on Almonds ales. J.B. Almond was eventually bought by Burtonwood, but i had moved to pastures new by then. For those who know the present day Standish, The Wheatsheaf pub was where Aldi now is and the brewery directly behind it, entrance from School Lane. As a further matter of interest, J. B. Almond lived in 'The Beeches' the house which is now part of Albert's restaurant.
Ron, there is a photo of Shevington St Anne's football team 1921-22 season in a publication by Nicholas Webb and the staff of Wigan Heritage Service. On the team is a J Speakman (back row 2nd from right). He is a dead ringer for the (non-playing) man on back row 2nd from right on this Almond Brewery team photo. If not the same person, surely the same family, possibly his father? Does no-one have archive of these local teams from the past?
