Family group of Martlews of Loch Street, Lamberhead Green.
Back row: George Edwin, Harold, Lily(Wilcock),my Grandma Mary Alice (Powell), Doris, Leah(Gaskell), William
Front Row: Ethel, Lizzie(Moss), Great Grandma Martlew, Tom.
According to my Dad, Jack Powell, most of them stayed in Loch Street when they got married, all living in the same row. Then one of the son's in law, Frank Gaskell bought most of the
houses. He used to have a bakehouse at the bottom end of Loch Street, and also a cake shop on Orrell Road.

Kath, Gaskells bakery was at the end of Bradshaw st, where the new school is being built. when it closed down Bandag tyres moved in

It's not that bakery. I know which one you mean - that one was at the top of the `Gossips' and was a much bigger concern. This other one was a little family bakery. At the bottom of Loch Street there was an entry (at the end of the row of terraced houses after the Independent Methodist Chapel.)and you went through there to get to the bakery. I think you could also get to it from Fleet Street (behind the
Alma). Anyone who lived around Loch Street or McDonald Street etc around the 50's would know it.

Thanks Kath,I remember it now, I seem to think you went down a tunnel and the bakery was in the yard behind the chapel in Fleet St. I did not live in Loch St but I lived close by from 1952 till 1970.

The entry was the one you went down to get to the backs of the houses on Loch Street. As you went down the entry, the bakehouse was just on the right. It was run by Frank Gaskell's 3 daughters - Margaret Sanderson, Kathleen Holt and Lilian Prescott.

This photo of the martlews looks later than the 1920s George Edwin was born 1901 so looks a lot older than in his twenties here,it must have been before 1943 as that's when Mary died?

Just found a link in my family tree to the Martlew family. My grandfather's Aunt Mary (Sharrock) married George Martlew. They had 14 children. He was a fish dealer. Is this the same family?

Comment by: Neil Moss on 22nd July 2020 at 22:43

I have a very similar picture to this, taken at the same function I believe. Mine has the Moss’s on it as well as some of the Martlews. I’d be really grateful if you could contact me (email supplied)
The link to your family is that my Grandma’s sister Hilda Dean married George Edwin Martlew.

Comment by: Kath Millett on 30th January 2022 at 12:19

Hi Sheila. I've only just seen your post. I remember your Dad from Loch St Ind Methodist. My Dad Jack Powell was his cousin. His sister was Margaret Smalley and I expect you'll know the family

Comment by: Hazel Simpson on 25th February 2023 at 23:37

My maternal Grandmother was Doris Martlew, my Mum is her daughter Eileen - still amazing at nearly 86

Comment by: Philip Martlew on 5th July 2023 at 13:31

My fathers Aunt was Doris. He used to speak fondly of her. My dad was George Martlew.

Evidently type 1 diabetes was rife in the family. My dad George contracted it.
