I sketched that scene in pen-and-ink for my department manager many years ago. I'm sure it wouldn't have matched Isherwood's but my boss was happy with it!
As soon as I saw that hint of colourisation I knew it must be one of Keith’s. A perfect addition to an old photograph.
Great picture.
You can see the spire of St Thomas’s Church in the background. An act of sheer vandalism to demolish such a beautiful building.
St Joseph’s church can be seen behind that, now long abandoned and in a sorry state of neglect.
Thank you for uploading this wonderful photograph, Keith.
It brings back many memories for me as I used to regularly see Lawrence Isherwood as he was a regular customer at the grocer's shop which I was sent to as a kid; on very many occasions, he was either in the shop when I entered or he came into the shop when I was in.
Also, I walked past his house over a thousand times and regularly saw him walking down or up Wigan Lane.
Additionally, met and spoke to Theodore a number of times and I regularly saw and chatted to Harry Walder - and a number of other artists.
Wigan had and has a lot to offer and is far more than just an old town stuck somewhere in the north/northwest of England.
