A photo of William Halliwell in 1940. William was born on November 5th 1860 and when this photo was taken he was a widowed ex-coal hewer with 56 years experience. I think it’s remarkable that he looks so well after working in such a dangerous industry for so long. He was living at 39 Spring Road, Orrell, in an old stone terraced house that still exists today.

They raised the age limit for children working in the mines in 1870 from 10 to 12 because of death and injury to chidren

Thank you for that interesting piece of information Tom. It might be that William “got lucky” and started work as a 12 year old perhaps in 1872 or 1873, if so, he would have retired around 1928/29. Quite an achievement.

There were a lot of Bill Halliwell’s in our family and several miners . Do you know any further info about this Bill?
