Daniel Swann - born 1896 - of William Street, Lower Ince, photographed in a photographer's studio. He may have been a butcher's boy - or he might have been posed in the get-up for some reason. He wasn't a big man, so this could have been taken as he started his working life at 14 as a butcher's boy before becoming a collier, and his proud mum wanted to record this step in his life.

I've just checked - by 1908 the family was living at 2 Junction Terrace, Lower Ince. Can someone check the Census for 1911 to see what occupation he had then, please? His parents were Daniel and Lydia.

I notice that 2 Junction Terrace still exists (off Ince Green Lane). There's a plaque on the terraced houses stating they were built in 1889, with the caption "Pleasant View”. The houses look in good order.

David, according to the 1911 census he was a Colliery Haulier under ground.

Thanks, Roy. I've since been reminded that most children finished school at 12 at that time - so the photograph might have been taken around 1907.

David, knowing of your interest in the WW's and those who served, Daniel was born 30th Dec 1895. He entered the Royal Navy, his first service date was 11th July 1917, first ship was Vivid ll, as you said previously he wasn't a big man, in fact he was only 5ft 1 I/2ins when he entered the navy. His last service date was 11th Feb 1818 on the Ajax, his service number was K44034. He married on 1st Jan 1921 to a local girl, Jane Harlow, according to their marriage cert he was a collier, he and his family were living at 21 Delegarte St, Ince at that time, if fact his parents were still at that address on the 1939 Register. He died on 17th Dec 1982 aged 85 and is buried in Westwood Cemetery.

Yes, Roy - I know most of that. I have put an image in the Album of him and Jane's brother in a frame made when he was aboard the Ajax - plus a pic of him, one of a few, taken on the Ajax.. I have more images of him - plus other material, which gives rise to the supposition that he was on the Zeebrugge raid - but he is not on the list of those who took part. All this comes from his daughter, Hilda, a parishioner at St Mary's, Lower Ince.

Sorry, his last service date should read 11th Feb1919.

As you will realise David, 1818 should read 1919.
