According to Google Maps, John O'Groats to Garswood is 479 miles?

Comment by: jmjh on 13th September 2022 at 08:36

To be fair not that far out in 1963 with no google etc.

Neil Barker, 3 rows of houses?

Comment by: Dave johnson on 13th September 2022 at 20:10

When this photo was taken the A9 was a lot more windier around Pitlochry and Blair Atholl etc. Probably was closer to 508 miles

i know the farm well . i was under that doctor who i think was named dicky mather . they nicked all those from downall green & the next to follow was the post office .

Sorry Can see am dealing with fault finders.
To the educated should have said three roads of houses.

Comment by: Cyril on 14th September 2022 at 13:13

Neil, in your post it was obvious what you meant about the houses, and I can see that you've had a nit-pick about the mileage too.

Hope you both enjoyed your ride up to John O' Groats, it's a long way no matter which route you follow, but with lots of great scenery. On a day out driving from Oban with stops here and there along the way we got as far up as Drumnadrochit, but with the gloaming about to be setting in we returned back to Oban, and sad that we never even had a glimpse of Nessie, though probably that's because with driving we'd kept off the Malt.

Once you start touring Scotland you can’t get enough of it! I only started in the ‘90’s and I have a long way to go yet…the last place was based at Pitlochry And Argyle I look forward to many more….

If you post wrong information you can expect to be corrected.
A friend of mine, who is over 80 years old and has lived near Garswood all his life, has posted a list of roads in Garswood containing rows of houses which he remembers since his childhood. However, the list has not been shown and, most likely, won't be to save face for someone who doesn't know much about Garswood.

Only God is my Almighty
Have lived in Garswood 60 years and 86 years old
Ever heard of poetic licence and light hearted banter.
The serious should try the Times crossword.

I've only heard of right and wrong licence. Anyway, Garswood is a nice part of St.Helens.

I hope the nit picking doesn’t put you off putting your lovely photos on Neil.
Very true there’s only One Almighty and it isn’t Bruce….

Garswood was part of Ashton in Makerfeild until the unfortunate boundary changes in the 1973 Act. By good fortune retained the WN4 postcode resulting in lower insurances cost .Lots would like return to the status quo .

Comment by: John Noakes on 16th September 2022 at 16:56

Garswood still is part of Ashton in Makerfield.
The 1972 Act was a 'local government act', which altered the local government but it didn't alter the town or manor.
A postcode represents where your letters are delivered from.

Thanks for that John.
When this took place we started to pay rates to St Helens and votes for elections
