What a kind-looking man, Veronica, and so smart. He puts me in mind of Doctor Turner from Call The Midwife. My Dad used to smoke a pipe and I used to love the smell of the tobacco; I used to buy him a packet of Holland House Aromatic every Christmas from Ashton's Tobacconists in Wigan.
He was a calm and kind man Irene, I’m surprised Prince his dog isn’t on the photo. He was left with 5 daughters to bring up when their mum died at 37. No benefits then and he worked down the pit. x
ps Irene, come to think of it he does have a look of Doctor Turner….:o))
Yes, I thought of Dr. Turner as soon as I saw the photo, even before I knew who he was. . I think it's the deep-set eyes and dark eye-brows, together with the gentle and caring expression on his face. What a difficult life he had, and one obviously faced with courage.
Veronica, I bet he found working in the Pit something of a doddle compared with grappling with the cares and woes of bringing up five daughters with no mother to help. My admiration for him knows no bounds!
This would have been my 2x grt grandad.
I suppose he got some help though Dtease from his own mother and they all turned out ok in the end. The age range was from 2yrs to 14 yrs.
The grandma lived till well in her eighties - I remember her as well. We would visit Grandad every Sunday going on the bus. Then went to her house afterwards.
She would press 2 pennies each in my and my brother’s hands. She seemed ancient to me.
But as you say the pit must have been a doddle. He lived to a good age as well. Bless him…
Veronica, your grandad reminds me of Dr Turner as well. I can also see your mum in him.He looks a very kind man.
Thanks Edna.
I have his War Record, I must look at it again a black mark against him was going off fishing! As he was born in 1898 or thereabouts his call up was in the latter 2 years of the war but it seems he was still kept in the Army after it ended. (That was probably a huge disappointment to him!).
ps the age range was from 2 to 16 with the children, so they probably brought one another up!
A proper looking Grandad.
A proper looking Grandad.
Seeing as you’ve posted twice Pw thank you. Grandads did look like proper Grandad’s back then - I think the clothes they wore with their flat caps and a pipe grasped between their teeth made them look older. Plus that generation grew up quickly after the first WW, then the Depression of the thirties and another WW - plus working down the pits… it was a very hard life for them.
No idea why it posts twice, it has happened to me a few times.Anyone know why?

I have no idea why it happens, Pw but I know it has happened to Maureen, one of the regular p-a-d followers, quite a few times, and she too was puzzled by it. Also. I have occasionally commented and the comment hasn't appeared at all. Gremlins!
