LOOKS LIKE THIS PAINTING COULD BE CALLED THE BEATLES?

Comment by: Cyril on 16th March 2022 at 16:00

Probably the time when John Lennon (depicted on the painting as being crucified) spouted that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ.

Today, Jesus is still talked about, whereas Lennon and The Beatles are practically forgotten.

Comment by: Scaramouche on 16th March 2022 at 18:19

Quote "The Beatles are practically forgotten." Cyril I'll put that remark down to OLD AGE.

Comment by: Kenny on 16th March 2022 at 21:20

Yes and they deserve to be forgotten.

Comment by: Debbie on 16th March 2022 at 21:22

Never liked Beatles and couldn't stand arrogant Lennon.

Comment by: Veronica on 16th March 2022 at 23:31

I was never a fan of the Beatles. Overrated , I couldn't understand the adulation. I'm glad Paul has stopped dyeing his hair, he looked ridiculous. Time he hung his guitar up...

Comment by: Cyril on 17th March 2022 at 00:05

scaramouche, besides at 16:00 today when was the last you heard John Lennon mentioned or The Beatles for that matter? The name of Jesus Christ has been and is still mentioned all of the time, be it either in praise or blasphemy.

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have long since gone on to do far better things in their own way, and the days of folks playing Beatles records backwards in the hope of hearing cryptic messages have, thankfully, long gone.

Why the quote OLD AGE, many young people would, I'm sure, agree with my quote, even to saying they have thankfully Long Been Forgotten!

I like The Beatles and John was a decent songwriter but his importance has been blown totally out of proportion . The way some people refer to him as some sort of messianic philosopher , ' Lennon said this , Lennon said that ' , is bewildering .
In my view he never said anything that a banal six form debating society wouldn't have come up with .
In the film ' The Great Lebowski ' , it's hinted that his most profound statement was " I am the Walrus ".

Comment by: Elizabeth on 17th March 2022 at 07:58

Couldn't agree more with Veronica and Cyril,so over-rated and McCartney 's voice gone completely now.

Comment by: Scaramouche on 17th March 2022 at 08:55

I bet there are more people in the world that know the words to the BEATLES songs than know passages from the Bible. Also I would bet that there are more people that have BEATLES music in some format, than own Bibles.

Ok, putting aside whether or not you are a fan of the Beatles let me comment on the photograph itself and the artist in particular. There’s no doubting that Lawrence Isherwood is one of Wigan’s most eccentric characters and whether you like his paintings or not they are now extremely collectible. I remember when he lost many of his paintings in a fire at his house on Wigan Lane. His subjects were sometimes bizarre and often hard to interpret but he captured the spirit of Wigan in his street scenes.

Comment by: Veronica on 17th March 2022 at 09:25

It's was the style of dancing that changed and the clothes fashions Elizabeth. Later on the rubbish songs under the influence of drugs

Comment by: Cyril on 17th March 2022 at 13:42

Graham, Isherwood art certainly is collectible and expensive too; selling for thousands of pounds. I can imagine collectors would even bid on his front window and door, if they'd been kept, remember them - they were plastered in what looked like Prussian Blue acrylic.

The Bible is the world's best selling book scaramouche, research estimations were between 5 to 7 billion copies in the last 1500 years.

A vast number of Beatles records were burned at the Beatle Bonfire in 1966, and if anyone still has any then they just may be able to give them away at a car boot sale.

The important thing is they were well liked by their generation got mobbed world wide good luck to them just working lads who got a break

Comment by: Janette on 18th March 2022 at 16:49

Couldn't stand them

Comment by: Veronica on 18th March 2022 at 18:45

Another nail in the coffin was the horrible Indian influence after the sojourn with the Marahishi (s)

Comment by: Cyril on 18th March 2022 at 19:42

No one is doubting that fact Tom, but like other music groups at the time from Liverpool the talents and guidance of George Martin contributed to the success of their hit records, that is until they and indeed others began dabbling in psychedelic substances and went off the rails.

Just a question . Did Lawrence Isherwood drink in the Cherry gardens pub ? His face looks familiar from circa the 1970's.

My eleven year old granddaughter has recently “discovered” the Beatles and now has encyclopaedic knowledge of Beatles history and can remember every word of, and sing along to most Beatles tracks. She is also currently attending Confirmation Classes. This isn’t a competition.

Comment by: Bruce Almighty on 19th March 2022 at 11:57

If it was a competition, in your granddaughter's case, the half-time score would be Jesus 1 - Beatles 1.
By the time she's in her twenties, neither will be on the score-sheet.

Comment by: Kay on 19th March 2022 at 21:50

I beg to differ Bruce,Christianity has been around for 2000 years.

Comment by: Bruce Almighty on 20th March 2022 at 19:36

Veronica and Kay, do keep up. Neither of you know what day it is.

Comment by: Veronica on 20th March 2022 at 22:11

That's a bit scathing just because we don't agree with you Bruce...!
And disrespectful...perhaps 'Almighty' is the give away..

Comment by: Elizabeth on 21st March 2022 at 07:36

He knows he's wrong,it is he who needs to keep up !

Comment by: Elizabeth on 21st March 2022 at 07:39

Spot on Veronica, if that's the moniker he chooses, says it all.

Comment by: Veronica on 21st March 2022 at 12:54

You're right Elizabeth
There's an old saying -I first heard years ago to describe somebody so full of themself he/she was "peas above sticks''.... suits Brucie down to the ground! Not to bother ...

Comment by: Elizabeth on 21st March 2022 at 13:55
