Does anyone recognise anyone else in the photo?
The year was 1945/6 and took place in the Gaurdians Inn, Wigan. We think one of the ladies is Harriet Greenwood.
The horns which can just be seen hanging from the ceiling and the framed certificate on the wall suggest this room was also the meeting place of a lodge of the 'Buffs' - The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes.
Simon Greenwood: Looking at this photo is interesting, it should be a very happy event, however knowing what we all understand about being a POW in Japan for four years means it's not surprising that it looks a somber event.
You don't indicate who's who, so I think Sidney would be the chap on the right in uniform, William & Elizabeth would be by his side on each shoulder, his brothers are at the back again in uniform, and Harriet Greenwood could be the lady at the front of Sidney sat down.
Poor chap looks like he could be some where else if it was left to him, I hope he came through his nightmares Simon.
Hi John, are you a Greenwood? You are right apart from Syd's brother Jack was not at the event only Stanley was there. My dad is Stanley the black haired boy at the back. Harriet was my dad's aunty and her husband Samuel had died in 1934 aged 53. I dont know anyone from Samuel's side but i have located his grave. Please let me know if you know any others. Thanks
Hi Simon, no I'am not a Greenwood, I spent fourteen years on CCTV in a large hospital, so facial recognition and profiling was part of my job.
if this is the guardians on the corner of frog lane prescot st I think the horns will relate to the old cattle market which was held at the back and was connected to the railway the pub was usually full on these days back then
